How Each Energy Type Does “To-Do Lists”

In my Energy Profiling course, I teach that all 4 Types of people have a natural gift we share with the world. First we looked at how each Type does ideas, then how each Type does details.

Now, let’s take a look at how each Type does “to-do lists.”

Every woman manages tasks and most of us can get a lot done!

But the Type 3 way of getting things done amps it up to a whole new level–it’s our gift!

Join me and the Dressing Your Truth 4 Types Beauty Panel and explore how each Type of woman gets things done.

Learn the difference between a Type 1’s motivation to keep a to-do list and a Type 2’s motivation to keep one.

Also find out the difference between creating a “system” and creating a “plan.”

It’s amazing how even though we are operating in the Type 3 gift, we’re all still so true to our own nature. Do you see the difference?

  1. I am feeling very lucky to be married to a type 3 because he loves checking off things from the list and getting things done! As a type 1 I am so easily distracted, so like Marcy I do have to write things down… not too many things or its overwhelming! To make things more fun like folding laundry, I listen to videos like these or other good distractions because my mind is always going… I don’t like mundane tasks unless I can be learning something new at the same time or listening to great music!

    1. I, too, am a 1, I think, but with VERY strong t4 secondary. I am married to a 3, and am very grateful. He works very hard. But, because my 4 is very strong, I really need to have a system and a plan for most things, or know what the plan is. Does it bother other types, especially you 4’s, when 3’s just kind of take off and DO it? Without what looks like a plan, or without communicating the plan or system (because it’s in their head, is what I’m guessing:) Not with my husband so much, but when I’m working on a team, I feel myself get really nervous–a feeling of everything out of control–when all of a sudden someone just gets up and starts Doing! without a plan in place. Also, when someone starts moving really fast suddenly (and often there’s a mess made, it seems, or they didn’t clean up the area before beginning on a project:) and they didn’t complete first the thing they were already working on, these things really bother me! I have been known to try to get them to stop and sit down and make a plan, or, at the very least, communicate to me what the plan in their head is! As I write this, I can feel that feeling of going over the top of a roller coaster. It’s really uncomfortable to me. Also, do 3’s have trouble judging others or comparing because others can’t work as hard or fast as they can? Thoughts or feelings on these observations, anyone? Are my feelings consistent with other 4’s? Just wondering if I’m more 4/1 than 1/4:)

  2. I’m a 2/1 and like Michelle I can get a lot of things done and quickly…BUT not 5 things at once. I have to complete one and then on to the next, and whatever you do, don’t get me out of order of my plan!! I have lists too, but don’t really get thrilled about checking things off, just stressed if I am unable to complete them all. :((((

  3. I am a 2/3 and I resonated with Michelle. I want to get things done so I don’t have to worry about it anymore and I need to gather the details before I move forward. However, my secondary three helps me keep what needs to be done in my awareness. I said for a long time that I don’t have a to-do list, but I really do, it’s just in my head, and like the type three’s, I am aware of what has not been done because I don’t have the end result yet. But I move 1 project forward at a time. I cannot move 5 things forward at once.

  4. I am a type 1 (not sure of secondary yet)who to be honest doesn’t really like to do-lists, but makes them anyway, especially when the chores simply cannot wait any longer!
However usually I try to not write too many tasks at once, as it will make me stressed if I cannot finish everything. And it takes all the fun out of it! I also like to listen to some happy upbeat music when cleaning or doing laundry, to make it more enjoyable 🙂
I do relate to type 2 with the stress factor, but I also relate to type 4 with moving from A to B, as I am terrible at multitasking. I don’t relate much with type 3 though, as I in general am not good at getting a lot done, but it does happen occasionally if I am having a determined day 😉

  5. I’m a 4/1/2/3 and I’ve been adding things I’ve already done to my “to do” list for years, long before I learned about DYT. I do believe that it’s usually a T3 thing, but others do it too. 😉

      1. I’m a 2/4 and I also do this. I can see what Michelle means by clearing her list and getting rid of the stress, but checking off an item does the same thing for me, and I can see what I have accomplished.

I also often add details, notes, and sometimes doodles to my lists. Sometimes I use lists to prioritize items or plan what order to do things.

One Type 3 trait I covet is being able to get things done! There are so many things I’d like to do, but being 2/4 (plus a chronic illness which limits my energy), I have to accept that some of it is just not going to happen!

  6. I can’t wait for the next video. Like Deborah, I must have a plan of action, go from A to B to C, etc. Those I’ve delegated work to complete follow my plan, because I must see completion for each task before the next is begun. I begin with an mental outcome, determine priorities, have a plan. Because I know derailments probably will occur, I have alternatives. I am criticized by some because I do this, their opinions that more things should be done. If i were Type 3 I would. I just can’t manage someone roofing a building in town and someone doing the work on the farm at the same time as well as gathering all needed for taxes, taking care of insurance, FEMA, and more. My daughter says i need a personal assistant. I think I need to sell out and move to Hawaii. lol (Note: my priority was plumbing with a displaced family living with me due to being flooded out of their home. And we still must boil our water.)

  7. The accomplishment orientation of our society is what annoys me the most. While it is indeed necessary to do things to take of ourselves, our family, and our community, what is wrong with stopping to smell the roses and simply enjoying the little pleasures of our lives?

I wonder what type Jimmy Buffet is? 🙂

  8. Hello. Loved this video, and so timely! Is there anyway to do a follow-up on which type of planner, if any, is best for each type? Getting stuck with which planner would work for me. I’m a 2/1. Thanks.

    1. Hi there, I found a very unique and personal way to plan, it’s called bullet journal. You design it to work for you. From minimalist to creative artist, it evolves as you go and there’s so many inspiration blogs or IG accounts (bohoberry is one I like) to get you started (or overwhelmed, like me :)) I too believe I’m a 2/1, so planning out all my details and ideas is so necessary. An idea streams and then I spend all day thinking of details and get lost in thought. But if I can write the idea down so I don’t forget it, then I have a place to come back to, to add my details to get it done. I have dropped too many balls, being overwhelmed with many things going on in my head, and then I’m feeling guilty for lack of accountability, so this really works for my life. It also gives me a chance to express my creative side. Being able to do that has brought healing and relief. I forgot how much I enjoyed my artistic side.

  9. This series is really interesting. I love when you guys delve into the inner workings of each type. Just FYI – the link in the copy to the type one/ideas video is broken. The url was just typed in incorrectly I guess. Thanks for the videos!

  10. I’m a type 2/1. When I start feeling like I am slower or less accomplished than others I remember that my gifts of details CAN help things to get accomplished in a better way – attention to details can cause a project to be more effective, more true to purpose, more successful in the end. Some people might get impatient with the time I spend, but when I have collaborated with others and brought my gift for details and thoughtfulness, they have had to admit that often there would have been holes or even catastrophic results if they had gone forward without consideration to the details I brought up. Sometimes quality and attention to detail is more important than deadlines. Sometimes it isn’t, and I am learning to discern between those times. But my gifts are valuable to the process and others do well to allow for time to look at details.

  11. I’m T4, and can totally relate to the T4 in the video. Sometimes, I can have multiple tracks going, but more often than not, I end up dropping the ball as a result. My to-do lists are in black felt-tip, and straight-forward, no doodling. However, my T1 friend is always dressing up her lists with different colors and doodles, plus she switches planners often. 🙂

  12. As a Type 2, I covet Anna K’s top! Great colors, swirly pattern.. Can some clothing items really work for two different Types?

    1. I was thinking the same thing! Someone else asked this on one of the other videos in this series as well. The response was that the colors show up differently on different monitors, and that the colors are vibrant Type 3 colors with a lot of movement.

I see that the pattern has movemnet, but it also has a blended quality, and as you described it: a swirly pattern. Since color is the factor that would be most important, I guess we’d just have to see it in person to see that it’s Type 3. I want the Type 2 version! (Which would have to be soft & stretchy and those cuffs better not be too tight! Comfort! Ha,ha!)

      1. I’m a Type 1, and I also usually love Anna Kay’s tops. I think she just picks out attractive tops in general, and she also has a great figure.

  13. I do all of these things. All 4 types. Everyday. I’m so lost. On a side note: I thought it was funny that even without seating order or anyone saying it, you can totally tell which ladies are they lower energies (2&4) and which are higher (3&1). I had to keep adjusting my speakers on my computer depending on who was talking 🙂

  14. I’m T2/1. I totally resonated with Michelle when she talked about creating a list to relieve the stressful feelings. I have a practice as a therapist, I run my own nonprofit – Lists help me set priorities. To-do lists bring me to a calmer place where I can see “oh okay – I’m fine. I can do this”. And that’s empowering for me. I loved Marcy’s brilliant share of of deciding what to hire out and what to find a partner with – and I would add ‘and what to drop’. Sometimes some things don’t need to be done – at least by me. I’m still learning to delegate and that’s really important for me as a T2. I marvel at the T3 gift of swift ‘get-it-done’. I was exhausted just listening lol. Beautiful and very helpful series. Love! Thanks to the team and to you, Carol. 🙂

  15. I am a Type 4… I agree with systems approach… but not planning… or check lists… I force myself to create the latter but never refer to or follow them. I would appreciate Carol to comment/expound on this possible distinction.

  16. This is amazing! I’m working on 3 certifications at the moment and getting nowhere on any of them. Just realized that my type 2/1 nature would be better served if I could focus on finishing one at a time. Having 3 open is paralyzing for me. Totally going to give that a try.

  17. I used to live life as a T3. I learned a few months ago that I am NOT a T3 but a T1. My to-do list is overwhelming. Perhaps my secondary is T2. How can I do the things I have committed to and love to create but not be overwhelmed?

  18. I’m a T3 and what Carol said about the to-do list being in our head is so me. Sometimes I want to do some things but don’t do them so they stay in my head even for months and in some cases a year remembering them every now and then (usually when I’m busy or it’s not the time so I wait for when I can or say “I’ll do this when I have the time”). Like Carol said I might make a list just to get them done and feel satisfied by checking them.

  19. I’m a type 1. I could never do that thing the 3s do where I write things already accomplished on my to-do list because to me that feels like cheating. To-do lists aren’t written in stone for me anyhow. They are simply reminders of things I want to get accomplished so I don’t forget. I do like to see my accomplishments though and sometimes I will write myself an accomplishment list. This way I can write down those things I’ve already completed plus things that would never be on my to-do list (like a friend asking me last minute to help him move), but they are still there as proof that I got things accomplished that day.
