Soft waves, rosy pink blush, and more! (See how to make everything work for Type 2.)

When it comes to creating your personal style, you might be putting a lot of emphasis on your clothes—but with DYT, there are endless ways to express yourself and show off your unique flare!

Let’s talk about 3 big ones here: makeup, hair, and nails.

For Spring/Summer 2024, these trends feel vibrant, refreshing, and feminine. They give off a low-maintenance, easy vibe!

Makeup, hair, and nails can feel a little daunting—until you know what to do with them!

I’m Anne, your Type 2 Expert. I’m so excited to show you how to adapt these popular trends to Type 2.

I’ll teach you about each trend, then tell you what to do to make it Type 2, along with some considerations for each secondary Type! And of course, I’ll show you photos of every trend.

As Type 2s, we love details, both in our style and when gathering information. I’m giving you the lowdown so you can keep the trends as simple or as elaborate as you like. Let’s dive in!

Makeup Trends

Pick and choose the trends that speak to you, or wear them all together like I did here.

1. Colorful Eyeliners

These are perfectly in-season, bringing a playful and vibrant element to all makeup looks. They align with the joy and optimistic spirit of spring. It’s time to say goodbye to the traditional black and brown eyeliners (for now)—have fun making a bold, colorful statement! A helpful tip: make your eyes the star of the show by opting for a more neutral lip, like a nude, gentle pink, or brown lip gloss.

Does this trend favor Type 2 and how to make it work?

Yes! We can definitely wear more color on our eyes. And what a fun change from the go-to browns and grays. Type 2 colors are more subtle but can still add a nice, playful pop. I think it’s the perfect subtle addition to add interest to your makeup look!

2. Rosy Pink Blush

Oh, the sweet, sunkissed glow you’ll get with this trend! Pink blush shows a minimalist and natural aesthetic. It’s perfectly feminine and goes beautifully with the Girlcore Trend we talked about last week! It embodies the essence of spring, bringing a touch of blooming vitality and fresh beginnings.

3. Brown Glossy Lips

A flattering trend carrying over from Fall/Winter 2023 Style School. Browns and neutrals are still in, and they’ll pair perfectly with those colorful eyeliners we just mentioned! Go ahead and combine it with a gloss, since bringing in some high shine will create a girly, romantic flare. Brown lips provide a modern twist on classic nude lip looks, offering depth without being overpowering. If brown lips worry you, rest assured: this color complements a wide range of skin tones and can be easily paired with various makeup looks, from natural to dramatic!

Does this trend favor Type 2 and how to make it work?

I’ll be honest, I had not worn brown lips before Fall/Winter 2023 Style School, and even still, I was hesitant about it. But let me tell you, I wear brown lipstick all. the. time. now! So now that I’m on the brown lip bandwagon, I’m glad it’s not going anywhere. Like the other makeup trends, we can make it work when we choose Type 2 browns. Of course, we have a great selection in the DYT store!!

Any secondary Type considerations?
Here are a few color recommendations based on secondary, but be sure to check the full line-up of Type 2 brown lip products and choose your favorite. Have no doubt, they will all work for you!

  • Type 2/1: If you like a lighter application try the Bare Hug Lip Gloss with the Honey Bun Lip Liner
  • Type 2/3: You’ll love the slightly deeper tone of Mauve Lipstick paired with Honey Bun Lip Liner
  • Type 2/4: Alexa Lipstick is the perfect shade for you. Wear it with Pink Nude Lip Liner. Both colors are crossover colors with Type 4, so you know it’s a good choice for your combo!

Hair Trends

Here’s the good news: everything from last fall is still on trend! Those side parts, bangs, textured bobs, and bouncy layers will still have you sailing into summer. Now, here’s the even better news: the new spring/summer trends will make those styles even more playful, luxurious, and feminine!

1. Style: Soft Waves

This season we’re seeing a departure from overly-styled looks by embracing soft waves and natural curls. This low-maintenance look emphasizes an authentic journey into self-expression by accepting one’s own unique hair texture. If you don’t have curly hair then you can add soft curls with a curling iron or flat iron or try heatless waves. Maybe you have curls in hiding and it’s the perfect time to bring them out!

Does this trend favor Type 2 and how to make it work?

Soft? Waves? Yes, and yes! The s-curve created in curls is the epitome of Type 2 movement. If you haven’t tried my curly hair tutorial, give it a go. You may be surprised at what’s hiding behind that frizz. Natural or not, either way this soft-wave trend is sitting pretty with us Type 2s.

Any secondary Type considerations?

  • Type 2/1: Add movement by cutting in more layers. Consider a shorter style to make this style even less maintenance and quick-drying.
  • Type 2/3: If you have natural curls, try the “fringe” cut, which will add more volume and oomph to your overall style.
  • Type 2/4: A clean line on the bottom of the hair will help ground the softer movement of the curls. More blended layers will help the hair lay more stylized. A loose curl added by a hot tool will be stunning!

What keywords are important to remember for this trend? Soft, Relaxed

2. Color: Dark Roots with Subtle Highlights, and “Bronde”

We’re seeing low-maintenance hair color trends gaining momentum, focusing on easy-to-maintain looks that require minimal touch-ups and upkeep. Balayage and subtle highlights allow for a more relaxed process and longer intervals between salon visits. No need to worry when your dark roots start to show — it’s on trend!

“Bronde” is a great color choice for this season. It’s a nice mix of blonde and brown, allowing for less upkeep with color. Bronde also goes by other names, such as: honey blonde balayage, sandy brown, and ashy brown with blonde undertones.

Does this trend favor Type 2 and how to make it work?

Dark roots with subtle highlights are a great look for Type 2 because they create a more blended look on the hair. This is what I’ve been doing on my hair for a few years now and I love how long I can go between color appointments! This is a great way to slowly transition to gray as well.

The “bronde” trend naturally leans more warm (Type 1 and 3) in the color, so you need to specify that you want cool undertones in the final color. A finishing toner will help achieve the best color. Before your stylist starts with color, have a conversation to ensure you are on the same page, and take pictures to the salon as examples.

Any secondary Type considerations?

  • Type 2/1: Keep the “bronde” on the lighter side. Dark roots are also a great choice. You can play with more blonds around the crown of your head and right by your face and less in the back of your hair.
  • Type 2/3: You could go darker in color with “bronde” and your roots. A cool-neutral color option would look great on you.
  • Type 2/4: You can pull off higher contrast between your roots and highlights, or you may prefer no contrast with more of an all-over color look.

What keywords are important to remember for this trend? Blended, Cool

3. Girlcore Hair Accessories

Girlcore is really showing up this season! Bows, claw clips, barrettes, and headbands offer a playful and versatile way to elevate any hairstyle quickly. They add interest and personality to your hair, dipping back into childhood with a girly and feminine vibe. The possibilities for personal expression and creativity are endless! You might think this trend is only meant for a certain Type or age, but I invite you to give it a try!

Does this trend favor Type 2 and how to make it work?

This trend favoring Type 2 energy is a great way to add detail to your look. Play with these hair additions to bring pattern, detail, and softness into any look. Don’t overcomplicate this one. It can be as easy as swapping your brown claw clip for a more colorful option.

Any secondary Type considerations?

  • Type 2/1: You will enjoy playing with a wide variety of these accessories, including small-to-large bows, headbands, barrettes, scrunchies, etc. Bring some floral patterns into it!
  • Type 2/3: Go more substantial with a wide headband, a bigger bow, a hair scarf, larger clips, etc.
  • Type 2/4: Parts of this trend (bows) may feel too animated for you. Try a headband or pearl barrette to add a touch of romance.

What keywords are important to remember for this trend? Beautiful, Feminine

Nail Trend – Short, Nude, and Glossy

Nude, glossy, and low maintenance? No pun intended, but we’re seeing a trend here! You’ll get such a tidy and clean nail look, which effortlessly displays a sophisticated vibe that anyone can pull off. Nude nails give an illusion of length by elongating the fingers, even with a short length. It’s practical and elegant—what more could you ask for?

How to pick the best nude nail: go one shade lighter or darker than your skin color. Finish off with a glossy top coat to give them a nice shine and finish for a feminine touch.

Does this trend favor Type 2 and how to make it work?

This trend is simple and natural, so it easily works for all four Types. I personally love its low-maintenance aspect.

Any secondary Type considerations?

  • Type 2/1: This simple trend might get a little boring for you, so add some sparkle to the polish or try a neutral-patterned nail sticker.
  • Type 2/3: Loving this one for our no-fuss; get down to business gals!
  • Type 2/4: Classy and simple, you’ll love this style. Add a bit of boldness by adding an accent nail with some more color.

What keywords are important to remember for this trend? Elongated, Effortless
