Let’s talk about 3 big ones here: makeup, hair, and nails.

For Spring/Summer 2024, these trends feel vibrant, refreshing, and feminine. They give off a low-maintenance, easy vibe!

Makeup, hair, and nails can feel a little daunting—until you know what to do with them!

I’m Kalista, your Type 4 Expert, and I’m so excited to show you how to take these popular trends and make them work for Type 4.

I’ll teach you each trend, then tell you what to do to make it Type 4, along with some considerations for each secondary Type! And, of course, show you photos of every trend. Let’s get started!

Makeup Trends

Pick and choose the trends that speak to you, or wear them all together like I did here.

1. Colorful Eyeliners

These are perfectly in-season, bringing a playful and vibrant element to all makeup looks. They align with the joy and optimistic spirit of spring. It’s time to say goodbye to the traditional black and brown eyeliners (for now)—have fun making a bold, colorful statement! A helpful tip: make your eyes the star of the show by opting for a more neutral lip, like a nude, gentle pink, or brown lip gloss.

Does this trend favor Type 4 and how to make it work?
Yes, yes, yes! Vividly colored eyeliners are an excellent way to showcase your pure hues. Whether you use a tight line along the lashes or a bold wing liner, colored eyeliners will liven up your spring style. Black is a trusty go-to, but color captivates and draws attention to your eyes. It’s the perfect bold addition to your makeup look!

  • No specific secondary recommendations when it comes to color. Pick your favorite and go for it! (I highly recommend our green eyeliner, Emerald. You can bring in your secondary movement in how you apply the liner. Check out this tutorial for tips!

2. Rosy Pink Blush

Oh, the sweet, sunkissed glow you’ll get with this trend! Pink blush shows a minimalist and natural aesthetic. It’s perfectly feminine, and it goes beautifully with the Girlcore Trend we talked about last week! It embodies the essence of spring, bringing a touch of blooming vitality and fresh beginnings.

3. Brown Glossy Lips

A flattering trend carrying over from Fall/Winter 2023 Style School. Browns and neutrals are still in, and they’ll pair perfectly with those colorful eyeliners we just mentioned! Go ahead and combine it with a gloss, since bringing in some high shine will create a girly, romantic flare. Brown lips provide a modern twist on classic nude lip looks, offering depth without overpowering. If brown lips worry you, rest assured: this color complements a wide range of skin tones and can be easily paired with various makeup looks, from natural to dramatic!

Does this trend favor Type 4 and how to make it work?
It can. When the brown is cool and neutral, brown in lip color creates a natural, chic, and understated “no makeup” look. It works equally well in matte or gloss. Before last summer, I had never even attempted brown lips. It took lots of sampling before narrowing in on what brown works for Type 4. Brown lips are now a regular in my makeup rotation, and I invite you to give them a try. You’ll be very glad you did.

Any secondary Type considerations?
Our combination of Pink Nude lip liner, Alexa lipstick, and Afterglow lipgloss works equally well for all secondaries. Try all three together, or lip liner with lipstick or gloss.

Hair Trends

Here’s the good news: everything from last fall is still on trend! Those side parts, bangs, textured bobs, and bouncy layers will still have you sailing into summer. Here’s the even better news: the new spring/summer trends will make those styles even more playful, luxurious, and feminine!

1. Style: Soft Waves

This season we’re seeing a departure from overly-styled looks by embracing soft waves and natural curls. This low-maintenance look emphasizes an authentic journey into self-expression by accepting one’s own unique hair texture. If you don’t have curly hair then you can add soft curls with a curling iron or flat iron or try heatless waves. Maybe you have curls in hiding and it’s the perfect time to bring them out!

Does this trend favor Type 4 and how to make it work?
At first thought, waves may not seem to work for us. But when styled with precision and intention, waves can create an even stillness to an otherwise fluid style. This can be an opportunity for those of us with naturally wavy or curly hair to embrace our hair’s natural movement.
Any secondary Type considerations?

  • Type 4/1: Add movement by cutting in more layers. Consider a shorter style to make this style even less maintenance and quick-drying.
  • Type 4/2: Blended layers will help you achieve still, even waves.
  • Type 4/3: Create drama with layers that allow for more volume texture.

What keywords are important to remember for this trend? Defined, Uniformity

2. Color: Dark Roots with Subtle Highlights, and “Bronde”

We’re seeing low-maintenance hair color trends gaining momentum, focusing on easy-to-maintain looks that require minimal touch-ups and upkeep. Balayage and subtle highlights allow for a more relaxed process and longer intervals between salon visits. No need to worry when your dark roots start to show — it’s on trend!

“Bronde” is a great color choice for this season. It’s a nice mix of blonde and brown, allowing for less upkeep with color. Bronde also goes by other names, such as ashy brown with blonde undertones and cool blonde.

Does this trend favor Type 4 and how to make it work?
Dark roots with lighter ends can create a bold contrast. Blended highlights may seem counterintuitive, but they achieve this look by smoothing the color transition.

The “bronde” trend naturally leans more warm (Type 1 and 3) in the color, so you need to specify that you want cool undertones in the final color. A finishing toner will help achieve the best color. Have a conversation with your stylist before she starts with color to ensure you are on the same page, and take pictures with you to the salon as examples.

Any secondary Type considerations?

  • Type 4/1: Keep the “bronde” on the lighter side. Dark roots are also a great choice to create movement. You can play with more blonds around the crown of your head and right by your face and less in the back of your hair.
  • Type 4/2: Blended is the keyword for your secondary Type 2. Keep the color transition and contrast low.
  • Type 4/3: You could go darker in color with “bronde” and with your roots. The higher contrast will create a dynamic style.

What keywords are important to remember for this trend? Cool, Neutral

3. Girlcore Hair Accessories

Girlcore is really showing up this season! Bows, claw clips, barrettes, and headbands all offer a playful and versatile way to quickly elevate any hairstyle. They add interest and personality to your hair, dipping back into childhood with a girly and feminine vibe. The possibilities for personal expression and creativity are endless! You might think this trend is only meant for a certain Type or age, but I invite you to give it a try!

These feminine additions are chic and classic, done in Type 4 style. Don’t get stuck thinking you’ve got to cover yourself in bows and lace. Swap a black clip for a pearl clip or a ribbon bow. Less is more, so be intentional about where to add your romantic touches.

Any secondary Type considerations?

  • Type 4/1: You will enjoy playing with a wide variety of these accessories, including small-large bows, headbands, barrettes, scrunchies, etc.
  • Type 4/2: Elegant additions with pearl clips, ribbon bows, and floral print headbands will romanticize your stunning style.
  • Type 4/3: Some parts of this trend (bows) may feel too soft or cutesy for you. Try a bold headband or pearl barrette to add a touch of romance.

What keywords are important to remember for this trend? Chic, Romantic

Nail Trend – Short, Nude, and Glossy

Nude, glossy, and low maintenance? No pun intended, but we’re seeing a trend here! You’ll get such a tidy and clean nail look, which effortlessly displays a sophisticated vibe that anyone can pull off. Nude nails give an illusion of length by elongating the fingers, even with a short length. It’s practical and elegant—what more could you ask for?

How to pick the best nude nail: go one shade lighter or darker than your skin color. Finish off with a glossy top coat to give them a nice shine and finish for a feminine touch.

Does this trend favor Type 4 and how to make it work?

Simple and chic—how Type 4 is that? Choose neutral colors with icy finishes and cool undertones. With this trend, your nails will complement any outfit. Any secondary Type considerations?

  • Type 4/1: Add a top coat with some sparkle and shimmer.
  • Type 4/2: Try a matte finish for a more subtle style.
  • Type 4/3: High gloss will give this natural style drama.

What keywords are important to remember for this trend? Simple, Icy
