4 Steps to a Hairstyle You’ll Love! Hair Cheat Sheet for All Four Types

What does it mean for a hairstyle to be yin or yang? This cheat sheet makes it easy to understand.

Need some help with your hairstyle?

Learning a few tips for expressing your unique dominant and secondary Type combo (or yin/yang combo) in your hairstyle can make all the difference!

If you’re new to the concept of defining your secondary style in terms of “yin/yang” and are asking yourself, “What on earth is she talking about?” Take a moment and review this short article first – Your Type’s Yin Yang Definition & Why it Matters. Once you understand which aspects of your hairstyle are “yin” and which ones are “yang,” you’ll be able to have a good hair day every day!

You might be curious, “What makes a hairstyle yin, and what makes another one yang?”

It’s easy to grasp the concept of the yin/yang definitions in general, but it can feel elusive when applying it to your hair.

This Hair Cheat Sheet will help you take your yin/yang expression to the next level—in your hairstyle!

When it comes to hair, you’re going to focus on 3 features:

  1. Color
  2. Cut
  3. Style

Each feature will either express a yin movement or a yang movement—and sometimes both! It’s possible for a feature to express both yin and yang qualities. Let’s take a closer look at them.

First, you’ll want to have your Style Guides to support you through this process. You might think the Style Guide is only for clothing and accessories, but it’s a great tool for your hair as well! It has keywords that are specific to your Type of beauty that will quite literally guide you to make the best hair decisions.

1. Color

Color can be such an enjoyable way to personalize your hairstyle. Just remember: Always stay true to your dominant Type’s colors. We never dip into our Secondary’s colors.

Yin – Blended, weave, low contrast, or all-over color, and cool colors for Type 2 & Type 4
Yang – Chunky, substantial, high contrast, and warm colors for Type 1 & Type 3

(You can even put your Style Guide up to your hair and see if your hair color harmonizes or not.)

2. Cut

Your cut is the “design line” of the hair. Your cut creates the shape and foundation for the 3rd step, which is style. So it’s very important to pay close attention to the cut you get!

You could phrase this in a question, “What shapes do I see?” Again, refer to your Style Guide to know which shapes to look for.

Yin – Blended, soft, clean lines, elongated and gentle lines
Yang – Textured, angles, piecey, asymmetry, strong lines, swift lines

3. Style

Style is what you do with the cut. Two people could have the same cut but style it completely differently to get two unique looks!

Overall you want to achieve this movement:

Yin – Soft, smooth, sleek
Yang – Angles, asymmetry, height

Now it’s your turn! Just follow these steps:

1. Determine your Yin/Yang expression based on your dominant and secondary.

Type 1: Yang-Yin
Type 2: Yin-Yin
Type 3: Yang-Yang
Type 4: Yin-Yang

For example, I’m a Type 3/4. So my Yin/Yang combo is: Yang-Yang-Yin-Yang

2. Choose 1-2 keywords from your dominant Energy Type.

Check the back of your Style Guide for your keywords.

  • Type 1: Upward, Light, Animated, Buoyant, Random, and Fun.
  • Type 2: Soft, Subtle, Blended, Connected, Cascading, and Flowing
  • Type 3: Textured, Angled, Substantial, Rich, Dynamic, and Edgy
  • Type 4: Constant, Still, Bold, Exact, Polished, and Clean

3. Choose 1-2 keywords or movement from your secondary Energy.

For example, you could follow this guide:

  • Secondary 1 – Height, Animation
  • Secondary 2 – Swoop, Blended
  • Secondary 3 – Texture, Substance
  • Secondary 4 – Sleek, Bluntness

4. See how it feels!

Trust yourself. When it comes to your hair, you’ll know what feels right. I have learned that I can feel if my Yin/Yang expression is off. It feels out of balance for me. When I notice this, I take a moment and break down the variable of my hair and can quickly determine whether I have too much yang or too much yin.

Think of it this way. If you’re a…

  • Triple yin to one yang – you need a yin dominance in your hair with a touch of yang.
  • Triple yang to one yin – you need a yang dominance in your hair with a touch of yin.
  • Equal amounts of yin and yang – you need a balance of yin and yang in your hair.
