  1. Very helpful; I’ve converted broken shadows to the “ok, I’ll wet the brush and do the DIY creme shadow approach” but it’s hard to control amount/intensity. I would note for the pressing down step – wax paper is specifically waxed to be non-absorbent, so it wouldn’t work as well for this step (it would keep your quarter clean, but it wouldn’t pick up excess alcohol or water.) Thank you, ladies!

  2. Michelle, have you ever used this technique with eye shadow? If so, does the alcohol affect your eyes? Would it be better to use water on the eye shadow?

    1. Christine, it works the same with eye shadow. I haven’t noticed the alcohol affecting my eyes. I think it evaporates so it shouldn’t be a problem. You can always use water or witch hazel if you’re concerned.

  3. Happiness! I have used this recompacting method with rubbing alcohol and it held wonderfully! Is there a way to salvage lip liner that keeps popping out of the wand? I always have to chase the tiny piece before it heads down the drain. Love it Michelle thanks for the great fix-it’s videos 😀

      1. Awesome! Hey! I have an idea! Maybe you could help out with that idea. How about using a touch of heat? It just might meld it back together, what do you think? I think it would be easier to do with a broken lipstick, do you have further suggestions?
Thanks for taking time to answer my question.
Thanks Michelle you’re videos have been great fun and helpful. Toodles!

        1. I’ve read that it works great for lipstick, so I’ll bet it could work for the lip liner as well. Try it and let us know how it goes!

  4. Great idea! I think the alcohol is better than the water for sanitary purposes, especially if the make-up will be applied to the eyes.

  5. Love…Love… Love …. this.. one of mine broke.. and I Didn’t want to throw it away.. I kept babying it.. what a mess…! ugh… ! Now I can fix it… Michelle… Your AMAZING… ! Thank you for being a part of DYT…! 🙂

  6. Wish I saw this before tossing my broken eyebrow powder! Now I know what to do next time I clumsily drop my compacts. Thank you so much Michelle.

  7. The alcohol evaporates more quickly so doesn’t take as long to dry as water. plus sanitizes the makeup. An idea for a DYI dropper…use a drinking straw, insert into the bottle of alcohol, put forefinger over the end and keeping your finger on remove from bottle. The alcohol will be in the straw and you can slightly raise your finger to allow alcohol to drip into compact until you have the amount you want.

  8. Yes! A money-saver! Thank you. My makeup dries up & crumbles whenever I leave it in my vehicle. The hot weather just scorches any & all powder makeup.

  9. Michelle, you are a genius, pure and simple! I just want to know – where did you find your AMAZING sweater? Any chance it’s still findable this season?

    1. Thank you Holly. I bought the sweater at Target several years ago (it had a cream background but I dyed it blue). Maybe you can find one on eBay. The brand is Merona.

      1. Good idea…I would have sent a private message on facebook, but see you’re not on there much – you’ve always seemed so familiar, and I see you went to East High…me, too, 84 (soooooo long ago!) – I’m not sure you were in my class, but a sibling right around there, or maybe you right around there?? Anyway, I’ll definitely do a sweater hunt! Thanks!

  10. I was just fixing my daughter’s blush that got broken, and I added a drop of water. I realized that because there is a little oil in the makeup, the water just ran off of the top and didn’t get absorbed in. So, if your makeup has any oil in it, use alcohol instead of water. Also, tissue paper is better to use than wax paper I have found!

  11. For a lipstick that’s broken off–using a match carefully soften the lipstick left in the base of the tube. Reseat the broken piece and make sure it’s straight. Now stick in in the fridge for 10-15 minutes. Cleap up if necessary. It will be pretty much as good a new!
